History of Charakas

⛰️ City named after a rock

  • Charakas is a village in the province of Monofatsiou and until 2010 a district of the municipality of Asterousia in the prefecture of Herakleion. The adjacent mountain range is called Asterousia.

    The village, previously known as Agios Ioannis, is named after a 35 meter high rock with a castle and a church from the Venetian period to the west of Charakas.

    • The beach of Matala is renowned for its impressive caves carved into the surrounding rock walls, once used as ancient dwellings. This spacious sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing and swimming in crystal-clear blue waters. In the 1960s, Matala became a popular meeting place for hippies and still retains its lively, artistic spirit today. The town features a variety of restaurants and bars, offering a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Matala is located about 45 minutes by car from us, making it an ideal day trip destination.
